JINYA Ramen Bar SouthPark

jinya ramen bar charlotte

Jahzmin French has loved the food industry since her first job waiting tables in high school. Now two decades later, the industry veteran has come to Charlotte as local franchise owner of JINYA Ramen Bar. JAHZMIN FRENCH“I took the big leap, so to speak, moving back to Pensacola, and I just did my consulting business full time. Mainly because in West Palm, I learned how many people needed help with their restaurant.

JINYA Ramen Bar - SouthPark

If its not on the menu, it needs to me added! I really enjoyed my experience and I look forward to coming back again when Im in Charlotte. My team and I work in walking distance to this restaurant and we wanted to have the opportunity to enjoy having a ramen restaurant nearby so we went over for lunch on 4/7.

Hours

Youre then greeted by the rest of the staff with a hefty irasshai which means welcome. Our waitress was kind and helpful in suggesting delicious menu items since it was our first time. Because it was my birthday, the owner asked the bartender to make a special drink for me and it was DELICIOUS!!!

Menu

At the hour mark, we were still waiting for our food while most of the tables that arrived after us got their ramen. We didnt order any appetizers and only drank water, minimal adjustments to the menu items as well so it makes no sense that our food took 1 hour and 20 minutes. We asked for to go bags around 45 minutes in, and we still waited 1 hour and 20 minutes to get the full order. We asked for sauce containers, and by the time our to go order was ready, we still didnt have sauce containers.

So, if you’re ever in the mood for authentic ramen dishes or simply want to try something new, then you’re going to want to add JINYA to your list.

Look left and you’ll see the actual ramen bar, located right behind the community table, where you can sit and dine with strangers. French says these two features really bring the authenticity of Japan to the restaurant. From its customizable menu to sleek interiors, JINYA Ramen Bar presents a contemporary Japanese dining ideal for lively social gatherings for all ages. JAHZMIN FRENCHAt the end of the day, JINYA just fit with what Jahzmin wanted to do next in the food world. An elegant ramen bowl as presented at JINYA Ramen Bar.

Location Details

That landed her in West Palm Beach at Hurricane Grill as their first Black woman GM and eventually the opening of her own restaurant consulting business back home in Pensacola. Standing on the corner of South Tryon and Hill Street is the newest monument in Black ownership in the form of JINYA Ramen Bar. No stranger to the struggles found growing up in a single-parent home, Jahzmin has quite literally started from ground zero. But it didn’t come without its obstacles, especially since the restaurant opened in the midst of the pandemic. Two of the biggest challenges French says they still face is importing food from Japan and finding and keeping the right people on her team. But it’s French’s love for food and community that gets her through the tough moments.

French says the ride to owning a restaurant has been a wild and exhausting one. She says no two days are the same, but that’s what brings the most excitement to her day. Becoming a restaurateur wasn’t the plan when she got her first job as a cashier at Steak 'nShake.

(photo courtesy of jinyaramenbar.com)That curiosity led to the exploration of a few hot, upcoming franchises—one being Salata, which just so happens to be JINYA’s next door neighbor. Recently opened on the ground floor of the Ally building on S. Tryon Street, the Japanese scratch-made kitchen serves its namesake — ramen noodles — along with rice bowls, desserts and other Japanese-inspired fare. The location seats 125 people and has a full bar. With vegan options and a focus on “clean eating,” Jinya’s got something for everyone. In addition to ramen, they have rice bowls, salads, desert, and cocktails.

From the fresh, handmade menu to the sleek interior, full bar and banging playlist—it’s definitely a favorite of THE BLOCK and is sure to become one of yours as well. JINYA is known for its slow-cooked approach to ramen, made from broths simmered for 20 hours in-house. From its customizable menu to sleek interiors, JINYA Ramen Bar presents a contemporary Japanese dining ideal for lively social gatherings for all ages. Before Jinya, French and Phelps owned a Louisiana barbecue-style restaurant in Florida. She and Phelps wanted to build on a reputable brand that couldn’t easily be duplicated. And they wanted it in a place experiencing a lot of growth.

I decided to support a black owned business for my birthday. And can I tell you, I was not disappointed. From the friendly staff and owner to the delicious food and drinks, this place checks off all the boxes when it comes to an enjoyable dining experience. As you enter the restaurant, youre greeted by a beautiful and pleasant host who guides you into the dining area.

They already have menu favorites, like the Spicy Chicken Ramen bowl, and the Sun Goddess cocktail. For Ramen beginners to full Ramen enthusiasts this is a place to be.The service was okay, a little slow at points but didnt detract from the overall meal. Beautifully appointed, upbeat vibes, food and flavor were outstanding. Just understand since it is so new there seems to be some kinks to work out with respect to bar/drinks timeliness as others have mentioned.

“We were between a few different brands [before choosing JINYA], and Salata was one of them! With no shortage of restaurants in Pensacola and West Palm Beach, Jahzmin quickly found her niche and immediately excelled in it. Think Gordon Ramsay, but a Black woman and way nicer. I caught up with French during a busy lunch hour to find out how she does it — owning, managing, breaking glass ceilings. Bringing the JINYA brand to Charlotte during a pandemic, she says, has come with its challenges, but she’s inspired by the customer feedback and the restaurant’s early sales. French, who co-owns the Uptown franchise with business partner Brad Phelps, says she plans to open a second JINYA, in SouthPark, in early 2022, followed by others in the Charlotte market.

When you support the work of QCity Metro, you also support the communities we serve. Walking into Jinya Ramen Bar in uptown Charlotte, the lively, eclectic atmosphere of the Japanese scratch kitchen will immediately encapsulate you.

They didn’t know inventory, cost of sales, how employees could be stealing from them,” Jahzmin divulged. “Honestly, nobody could’ve told me that I would be here with a JINYA in Charlotte. I didn’t even know what a JINYA was to be completely honest and transparent! But my partner and I, we had three restaurants in Louisiana and our third restaurant we bought was from a guy that owned a JINYA. “It’s actually hard for me to watch [Ramsay] because of his delivery [laughs], but everything he says is absolutely true. When you’re thinking about food safety, flavor and presentation you sometimes need somebody that’s going to tell it like it is,” Jahzmin said.

SOUTH LOOP

I don’t have a bike map for this part of the Hoosier State. At sunset when Google Maps once again steers my relatively skinny-tired touring bike onto a farm road with coarse gravel, I’ve had enough. I backtrack to Route 421, the main highway to West Lafayette, where, infuriatingly, the paved shoulder is occupied by a rumble strip, so I can’t ride in it. Following a couple hours of dodging trucks, at 1 AM I arrive at my cheap motel exhausted, but thankfully in one piece. Using the Northwest Indiana bike map, I navigate southeast on the Erie-Lackawanna Trail, and then east on the Oak Savannah, which is heavily wooded and dark. The Onion gag crossed my mind again earlier this spring, and I did a little research and found the closest Waffle House to City Hall is a 196-mile direct bicycle ride away in Avon, Indiana, a western suburb of Indianapolis.

I ride 112th Street across the Indiana border, then roll south on a long causeway path across Wolf Lake. The misty night is lit up by steel mills and casinos, and it’s spooky in a good way. The Lakefront Trail is packed, and I’ve got a warm headwind out of the south, but the weather is so gorgeous I don’t mind. By the time I reach 63rd Street Beach, my stomach is growling, so I detour south on Jeffrey Boulevard into South Shore towards a dinner destination. Back in 2005, the Onion ran the clever headline, “Mason-Dixon Line Renamed IHOP-Waffle House Line,” a play on the fact that the latter’s 2,100+ locations are concentrated in southeastern states. But in reality, there are a number of Yankee Waffle Houses—the northernmost appears to be in Austinburg, Ohio, near Ashtabula.

Instead I grab a breaded pork tenderloin, an indigenous Indiana sandwich, from a Casey’s convenience store. From the yellow homogenized vegetable oil spread used instead of butter, to the half-centimeter-thick rubbery waffles, just about everything served is the cheapest, most heavily processed version available. How a business like Waffle House, which boasts its own storm center that it activates when necessary, plans for a natural disaster is not that different from how a government agency would plan for the same event. Before, during and after a natural disaster, like Hurricane Ian, the agency looks to private-sector partners like Waffle House to determine how businesses are faring in the impacted areas. If Waffle House restaurants (which are normally open 24/7) are forced to suspend operations in a disaster zone, that's a good sign that the community could require more robust disaster relief services.

On Monday morning it’s time to leave the lakefront for my 104-mile ride to West Lafayette, the home of Purdue University. Here at UrbanMatter, we pride ourselves on leading the charge when it comes to Chicago entertainment. From venues, restaurants, and bars to events, festivals, and music — we’ve got you covered. Today you can find Isaiah Muse’s bar on the top floor of the museum’s history galleries, near the boombox from “Do The Right Thing” and the brick facade of a Newark, N.J., housing project. Lucas as a child, he remembers not being able to ride his bike south out of Jackson Park and across 68th Street; whenever he did white children would pummel him with rocks. And until its dissolution in 1973, the South Shore Country Club, hugging 70 acres of green along Lake Michigan and serving as a kind of touchstone in the neighborhood (later becoming South Shore Cultural Center), refused to admit blacks or Jews.

About Chicago's Home of Chicken & Waffles

Muse Waffle House on South Vincennes (which later in the day, doubled as a rib joint); after moving to South Shore, when the restaurant closed at night, he would invite friends and employees back to his condo. Many of the bars and nightclubs in the neighborhood then were white-owned, and as his brother Robert said, Isaiah’s guests were old enough to have known Jim Crow firsthand — they would rather have a house party. Nothing feels better than a restaurant that reminds you of home. Start your day with the steaming coffee and delicious waffles at Cozy Corner Restaurant and Pancake House on Milwaukee Ave, and say goodbye to Monday blues. Loaded with ice cream, fruit, sprinkles, chocolate chips, and other fun toppings, you can take your dessert style waffle with you wherever, because it comes in a hand held wrap!

The best of Chicago, every day.

"Our planning gets us ready for the storm and so once it has passed our managers can see what's going on in the area and respond right after an emergency." Using her Smithsonian contacts, she got in touch with William Pretzer, who had been tasked with producing the “Changing America” exhibit in the new museum. And so, like many upwardly mobile African-Americans in Bronzeville, Muse left for the cool lake breezes and charming brick bungalows of the South Shore neighborhood, which stretches roughly from 67th Street and Jackson Park to 79th Street at the south. Ask around South Shore today for who knew Isaiah Muse and the silence is as loud as the silence that settled long ago over the neighborhood’s commercial strips. They recall Michelle Obama, and Kanye West, and David Mamet, all of whom lived blocks away from Muse’s home.

When I reveal I’ve ridden all the way from Chicago just to visit this Waffle House, he cracks a huge smile. He later tells me, “At first, I was like ‘This guy is joking,’ but when you explained your story I was amazed. The trip required a lot of determination and is such an awesome story.” It’s heartwarming to get a hero’s welcome for completing my rather ridiculous mission. At dinnertime, I visit the Whistle Stop in Monon, a restaurant surrounded by vintage railcars. The special of ham steak with au gratin potatoes would hit the spot, but sadly the place closed hours earlier.

Once you try every topping combination, be sure to try their other sweets like slushies, milkshakes, and mini Eiffels. With three locations across the Chicagoland area (Lincoln Park, Downers Grove, and Bolingbrook) you can find your new favorite treat whether you’re in the city or the suburbs. As this movement began to expand, new restaurants were built in Georgia as well as neighboring states, and the “Yellow Sign” soon became a familiar landmark along city streets and interstate highways across the country. Today, the Waffle House system is more than 1,900 locations in 25 states. Our catering menu features our signature waffles and personalized creations, reflecting our commitment to delivering an unparalleled catering experience. Our best-seller list is updated monthly to ensure you’re always in for a delightful surprise, with our waffles consistently finding their way to the top.

Eleven locations in mandatory evacuation zones in Florida closed ahead of Hurricane Ian. At Chicago Waffles, we believe age should never stop you from enjoying delightful flavors. That’s why we offer a range of specially curated dishes for our beloved seniors. Muse Waffle House more than 30 years, and he did well enough to travel often with a longtime girlfriend.

The event is marked by worker actions, vigils and rallies around the world, with a focus on winning safer working conditions to avoid future preventable tragedies. The Dirty Dozen are selected by the National COSH team, with nominations from our network of COSH groups, workers, safety activists, union members, health and safety professionals and academic experts from across the country. Looming before me is the 1902 Soldiers and Sailors Monument, a 284-foot neoclassical limestone pillar, flanked by statues and fountains. The crowning touch is a 30-foot bronze female figure of Victory, holding a sword and a torch, with an eagle perched atop her head. During the last several miles into Avon on trails and subdivision streets at twilight, I eagerly anticipate the feast that awaits me. Then suddenly the Waffle House appears like a lighthouse in the night, looking exactly like every other branch I’ve visited on southern road trips.

But he never married, never had kids (Robert said Isaiah always thought he had a son in Oklahoma, but never found him). He was “a loner at heart,” Robert said, and family (none of whom lived in Chicago) didn’t keep up with him. Several hundred of those pieces came from Chicago. Oprah Winfrey donated three microphones, two dresses, a pair of matching armchairs and her famous white couch.

In 1955, two Georgia neighbors opened up a restaurant that would change the world. Joe Rogers Sr. and Tom Forkner were living in Avondale Estates, GA, when they decided to open a 24-hour, sit-down restaurant for their friends and neighbors, focused on people on both sides of the counter. That first restaurant opened the door to create the Waffle House brand that you see today. Chicago Waffles is a modern restaurant where the flavors of Belgian waffles and customizable omelettes blend seamlessly with South Loop history and culture. College student Dylan Fields, sitting with friends after bowling, agrees to snap my photo outside the diner.

South Facing House is Good or Bad: According to Vastu Shastra

south facing house

Just be careful not to overdo you remedies and set up a yin yang imbalance. You can take advantage of the south energy of fire by choosing a good front door color. This includes crimson, sunflower yellow, marigold, violet, eggplant, deep orange, or ginger, which are great colors for a south-facing front door. The Southern direction gains a lot of its energy from the sun, it is considered a high-energy zone.

Shingle Style

Shingle-style houses were designed as a work of art and encouraged creativity in their use of shapes and features. Italianate architecture continues the trend of asymmetrical design, romanticism, and Medieval influence — this time borrowing features from Medieval Italy. Italianate style is common up and down the East Coast and peaked in popularity between 1850 and 1880. Victorian homes were built between 1837 and 1901 while Queen Victoria reigned in Britain. “Victorian” actually refers to multiple styles that vary in influence, but each features ornate detailing and asymmetrical floor plans. Greek Revival homes often have decorative trim and moulding around the front door and windows.

The Associations Of Different Rooms With Life Aspects

The same applies when you want to build a garage or shed adjacent to your house. Ensure they aren’t blocking any windows on the side that gets the most sunlight. Apart from the location and season, the positioning of a house can affect how much sunlight it gets.

A South-Facing House and the Elements

Although it can tolerate some shade, full sun will allow it to produce its most spectacular colorful flowers. South-facing gardens get loads of sun and are perfect for plants that require low maintenance and are not fussy about the soil they grow in. Asclepias curassavica loves hot sunny climates and is ideal for your south-facing garden. It wants at least 8 hours of direct sun every day to grow at its best.

Advantages include abundant sunlight, the potential for energy efficiency, and opportunities for successful endeavors. It is recommended to position it towards the north or northeast. On the contrary, regions, where the temperature rises to extreme levels in summers, should preferably avoid south facing houses. Position the kitchen in the southeast and the bedroom in either the north or east direction. Avoid placing the main door’s entrance and kitchen in the southwest corner. This is a reason why you might – and will, if you observe carefully – see a lot of very powerful, influential, rich, successful and happy people living in south facing houses.

Avoid earth colors, metal colors, and water colors when choosing a front door paint color. You don't want to do anything to weaken or destroy the fire energy of the south sector. There are countless possible scenarios to each home and family in a south facing house.

Come winter months, and these houses may not get as much sunlight. Since the sun rises in the east, there is always the notion that east-facing houses get more sunlight than houses facing other directions. For the south entrance Vastu, it is recommended to install the door wither in the centre or a little towards the left. As it is considered bad to have an entrance door that opens to the south direction. As per Vastu Shastra, the direction you place your bathroom in is just as important as the other rooms in your home. Some of the best directions to consider while planning the bathroom vastu for a south-facing house are the east or north sides of a bedroom.

If you’re lucky enough to live in an area with a scenic vista—be it a lake, beach, mountains, or a skyline—the direction your home faces really matters. For new construction, try to maximize the aesthetic qualities of the site by orienting your house properly in order to make the most of the view. If you can, be sure to situate windows and outdoor spaces so that you’re able to of the beauty of your surroundings. Considering the direction a home faces is crucial for both house hunters and prospective new home builders.

In the U.S and the rest of the northern hemisphere, south-facing windows receive the greatest amount of sunlight because the sun shines from the south. It is considered as bad luck by many people who understand very little of vastu shastra. The main door can face in any direction (north, south, east or west).

Typically, a south-facing house vastu plan with a pooja room dictates that the north-east and west directions are ideal for your pooja room placement. Besides the location, there are a few other important factors to consider while setting up your pooja room in a south-facing house. When considering your home’s orientation, remember that it also affects your landscaping and outdoor spaces. After all, the direction that your yard faces determines the amount of sunlight it receives.

The amount of sunlight you get will vary depending on where you live. Square Yards is India's largest Integrated real estate marketplace, with category leadership presence across multiple touchpoints of consumer home ownership journey. South-facing home Vastu plans are good for Aries or Mesh Rashi people. The kid’s bedroom is placed in the west with the attached bathroom. A staircase goes south of the house, and another toilet is present under it. These a Vastu constraint plans that can be followed by one when redesigning or building.

If an east-facing house is located in the northern hemisphere, it tends to get direct sunlight in the morning, especially during summer. This makes the interiors of the houses warmer, which is great if the climate is generally colder in that location. According to south facing house Vastu plan, the north-east part in your home is best suited for building the living room.

Why a South facing home is not a bad thing according to Vastu

It is therefore imperative that we use the right color to balance the right tatva in its respective direction. Vastu is all about balancing the five elements in nature called the Panchamahabhutas or Pancha tatvas. You should preferably use light shades of brown, orange or red to paint the façade. Therefore, it is very important to consult a good Vastu consultant to help you choose the right placement for an entrance.

What is a South facing house as per Vastu?

If you don't, utilise vastu tips and tricks to remove doshas in your south-facing house. Use the right vastu principles to make the most of a home that faces any given direction. As your home will receive increased sunlight, it can increase the heat your walls receive, especially in a humid and tropical environment. Balance it by opting for open rooms, bigger windows and keeping ample shade options. When you enjoy extended hours of natural light, you’re bound to save on power consumption. As ventilation is also good in a south-facing home, you’ll not feel stuffy and overwhelmed.

However, with some efforts, you will definitely get a perfect plan for the same. A real bonus for gardeners who don’t enjoy fussing too much over their plants. Ensure that you choose a spot that does not get shade and is exposed to at least 6 to 8 hours of sun per day. Make sure you include them in your shopping list when heading off to your local flower market. And, because they love the sun, they are a perfect choice for a south-facing garden.

Feng Shui Tips for Decorating a South-Facing Front Door

The same considerations should be kept in mind in regard to rooms where you have any sort of ideal lighting wishes. The amount of light a room receives may affect the color and fabric choices you make when you decorate. For instance, you might steer away from red and orange hues in west-facing rooms, which get most of their sunlight from 2 p.m.

The direction a house faces might even influence your decor choices.

However, all 50 states are located in the northern hemisphere, with Florida and Hawaii being the two closest states to the equator. The direct sunlight adds warmth to the house, which reduces the need to turn up heating equipment. It also brightens up the house, so no artificial light is needed. The master bedroom is located in the southwest direction along with the guest room in the northeastern direction that comes with an attached bathroom in the north.

Factors To The Ideal Outdoor Feng Shui Fish Pond

In vastu shastra, a traditional Hindu system of architecture, east and north are considered to be of great importance for prosperity and health. Placement on the homesite can also be important for energy conservation and comfort. Typically a south-facing home gets sun for most of the day, especially at the front of the house, and is therefore usually brighter and warmer. A north-facing home gets sun at the back of the house and is typically darker and naturally cooler than a south-facing one. Avoid blocking the windows with trees or tall plants when landscaping around your house.

As per Vastu principles for south facing house, this is also the ideal choice for building the pooja room. If there are space constraints and building a separate pooja room may not be possible, you could dedicate a part of your living room for a small temple. The importance of Vastu colors for south facing houses cannot be undermined. The colors you use can make a huge difference in energy flow in the house. Also, since the planet Mars rules the south direction, people involved in professions or businesses related to Mars can choose a south facing house. If your main entrance faces north and you live in a region that gets ice and snow in the winter, your home could experience worse cold-weather effects.

This would be introducing metal to this area since it weakens earth. Don't be overzealous, you don't want to destroy this energy, since it is your love & relationship sector. The sickness star 2 for example, finds it’s way to the east and northwest sectors of the house. It strength is further reinforced by the 5 yellow as both are of earth element. Vastu defects to avoid in south-facing homes

In case there are multiple floors in the property, Vastu rules state that the master bedroom should be constructed on the top floor. According to south facing house Vastu plan, a plot that has any cut on any side is considered bad. Under the south-facing house Vastu plan, one must also be mindful that the plot should not slope from the north to the south. This would be hard to believe that certain energies in our house affect our relationship. The deadly combination of a poorly designed house and south direction can give birth to conflicts and misunderstandings among the family members. This is because of the imbalance of energies that creates such unhealthy environments that leads to relationship problems.

The Pueblo Revival was inspired by the indigenous Pueblo people’s architecture in the Southwestern US. Pueblo homes were made of adobe or stucco and designed to handle the extreme temperatures of the desert. French Country homes are designed with their environment in mind. They often feature neutral colors with soft, nature-inspired pops of color like sunshine yellows and grass greens. Federal-style homes became popular after the American Revolution and were a refined upgrade to the popular Georgian house style. They have the same recurring shape and symmetry as other Colonial house styles, but their delicate ornamentation sets them apart.

For example if there are two daughters, then the trigrams Sun and Tui at the southeast and west symbolizes them as the eldest and youngest daughters respectively. When there are children in the household, then their respective trigrams should also be taken into consideration for feng shui. A strong presence of Mars in your horoscope makes a South-facing home the perfect alignment to your energies. A commander from Ukraine's National Guard has said Russia is planning "unpleasant surprises" in a potential summer offensive.

Cottage houses come in a variety of styles and can mimic bungalows, Tudor house styles, and more. It would be best if you place windows and skylights on the side that gets the most sunlight to maximize the amount that it gets. This is to provide your house with as much natural light and warmth as possible. In terms of location, whether a place is located in the northern or southern hemisphere is also a huge factor.

Having said all this, I believe and trust that you – now – understand what a vastu compliant south facing house means and aren’t afraid – anymore – to dwell in one. In other words, I can say that if a house (be it South facing) is as per rules and guidelines of vastu shastra, then it’s bound to be auspicious – in fact amazingly auspicious. In fact as per vastu shastra, a South facing house can be the very auspicious house – if an only if – it follows certain – and very specific – vastu principles. If your door isn't located in the middle of the front of your home, check the grid to determine is it is in the southeast or southwest of the front side of your home.

How Alexico's $180 Million Deal With St Francis College Fell Apart The New York Times

dream house nyc

On one visit, I met a jazz player who comes nightly to the Dream House after work. On another late night occasion I saw couples visiting after their dinner dates. The Dream House is many things to many people, but for all it provides a moment of transcendence, transporting all who come to a state of mind far beyond the New York streets. A visit to the Dream House is highly recommended for those who wish to engage the often overlooked sense of hearing.

Barbie Is Not Like the Rest of Us

One-of-a-kind eveningwear by Nicolas Ghesquière, women’s creative director; timepieces and bijoux by Francesca Amfitheatrof, artistic director for the category; and made-to-order jackets by Pharrell Williams, men’s creative director, have pride of place. Climb two flights of creaky stairs and you’ll find a volunteer sitting at a small desk in a cramped hallway. The door to the Dream House thrums with palpable vibrations from the sound within.

MELA FOUNDATION

But the couple’s ideal version of “Dream House” operated from 1979 to 1985 in an old mercantile exchange building on Harrison Street in TriBeCa, where with the support of the Dia Art Foundation they installed an array of ambitious sound-and-light environments on six floors. His restrictive covenants would block a buyer who couldn’t afford a large house or top-line construction. And the restrictions would block houses from being built right up to the property line — he wouldn’t just tout the appearance of country living through widely spaced houses, he’d lock it into the lot requirements. So how does a nonprofit, donation-based space stay afloat and pay rent in pricey TriBeCa? "Dream House" is run by La Monte Young's MELA Foundation and supported by Dia Art Foundation, among others (the visuals and music that make up Dream House were exhibited by Dia in a different space, in Chelsea, in 2015).

These heirs started a decades-long process of divvying up the estate and parceling it out to other local developers and speculators. His restrictions were imposed privately, but in the format of a deed restrictive covenant that has the force of law — closely equivalent to modern, city-imposed restrictions contained in zoning regulations. Pierrepont’s marketing of Brooklyn Heights as one of America’s first suburbs is conventional wisdom, found everywhere from scholarly opinion pieces to the historical markers lining the streets of today’s landmark district. Reports emerged early last year that St. Francis was selling its former campus to the Alexico Group, the developer of Manhattan’s “Jenga” building. Brooklyn Heights is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in New York City so a sprawling campus is not the sort of property you want to hold onto just for the memories. But her wheelchair didn’t fit in the Dreamhouse elevator, and Barbie couldn’t go to the upper floors of her own home, just like versions of a doll that accompanied her and the Dreamhouse more than two decades earlier.

Choi’s work is now the main player in the larger of the two ‘rooms’ fashioned from this Tribeca loft. Take off your shoes, hand over ten dollars and you, too, can lie on the white shag carpet and absorb it all. Choi’s Environmental Composition 2017 No.1 (2017) is, in short, a massive black sheet that bisects the main space. It has been pinpricked thousands of times to create flowery, organic shapes that admit light and video from the other side. As with everything in the installation, the fullness is not immediately visible and, if you don’t take time to stare at the work, you won’t see the light bubbling behind the pinholes, a world beneath a world.

Turn your head to one side, or bend down, or raise an arm, and the tone will resonate in different ways throughout your body. Young’s student and disciple Jung Hee Choi, who is set to take over the project when the 88-year-old artist dies, adds that the Dream House is distinct from what most people think of as an art installation. Knowing the intimate and long-standing relationship of La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela to this work, makes the Dream House an incredibly special experience. Signs of their personal presence in the space are scattered about, and one has the feeling that they are sharing part of their home and part of themselves very generously with the world by keeping the Dream House open and freely accessible.

When St. Francis moved to Remsen Street in the 1960s, they kept one of these buildings. Continuing pressure for commercial space here, combined with new popular residential locations farther out in what was now a borough of New York City, tipped the block to almost wholly commercial over the course of a few decades. When Pierrepont died in 1838, his children inherited wide swaths of the family’s Brooklyn Heights land.

The share that were first-time homeowners was the lowest it’s been since at least 1981. Barbie’s body, careers, lifestyle and house — a hot pink monument of decadence and desire, now equipped with a swimming pool, slide and elevator — have all been qualities designed for children (and adults) to crave for themselves. Barbie has been the platonic ideal of what a young woman could and should be. “Every little girl needed a doll through which to project herself into her dream of her future,” Ruth Handler, the inventor of Barbie, told The New York Times in 1977. She named the doll after her own daughter (Ken was named after Ms. Handler’s son). After entering the townhouse, guests make their way up the winding Italian black marble staircase, admiring the jaw-dropping creations elegantly displayed in the many rooms.

Young is no stranger to decade-spanning projects focused on single notes and pitches. His landmark 1964 minimalist masterpiece The Well-Tuned Piano is a 50-year work in progress. Partly improvisatory, it’s played on a grand piano that must sit in the performance space for at least three months to become settled into “just intonation.” The work can take up to 6 hours to perform, and Young has revived it multiple times throughout the years. The piece was also an early collaboration with Zazeela, who employed her famed light installation The Magenta Lights.

Though it might’ve been successful marketing, Mattel’s pink dousing would later be criticized for perpetuating gender stereotypes. Mirroring the growing popularity of prefabricated construction, Barbie’s A-frame house was modular — children could deconstruct it by pulling the sections apart. As the 1970s ended, Barbie — and many Americans — gave up the metropolitan lifestyle and moved out to the suburbs with a prototypical A-frame home. To impress men, Ms. Brown instructed women on having a “wall of pictures,” a “sexy kitchen” and plenty of books — features found in Barbie’s townhouse.

More than 60 years of Barbie’s Dreamhouses have further instilled that in us from a young age. The stark reminders that it’s a fantasyland might put some viewers at ease. Aspects of the Dreamhouses are meant to appear “architecturally implausible” to keep things toylike, said Ms. Spencer. The four Dreamhouses had no walls, and there were also no toilets, no shadows, no color white. They used cheap fake grass — the higher quality fake grass appeared too realistic.

From the beginning, much of Barbie’s existence — her unrealistic physical proportions, the lack of racially diverse dolls, the toy’s reinforcing of gender roles — has been debated in jest and in seriousness. But her home, which has not been as publicly parsed or praised like the doll, has been a mirror for the various social, political and economic changes the rest of the country was experiencing. It has followed housing patterns and trends, from chic, compact urban living to suburban sprawl to pure excess. At times, it has been out of step, ignoring the country’s ills (Barbie’s never been broke; she has never lost her house to foreclosure). A select group of the maison’s artisans — including a fine arts painter and a specialist in malletage (the crisscrossed padded lining of the trunks) — will be present on different dates to demonstrate their techniques. They will also meet one-on-one with clients who wish to personalize their goods or commission bespoke pieces.
